The craftsmanship, the attention to detail, the design and architecture are certainly something to behold. However, all the charm takes a back seat when old chimney problems exist. Here are the most common old chimney problems that should be addressed in aging and historic homes.<\/p>\n<h2>No Chimney Liner<\/h2>\n<p>We hear the word essential a lot these days. When it comes to older home construction one thing that wasn\u2019t considered essential was chimney liners. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/what-is-a-chimney-liner\/\">chimney liners<\/a> are a must for the safety and integrity of your chimney and your home. They aren\u2019t suggested, they are considered a necessary part of construction for a safe chimney in modern homes.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of chimney liners is one of the biggest risks in older home construction and one of the most of old common old chimney problems. Unlined chimneys can lead to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/chimney-fire\/\">Fire<\/a>. When a chimney is unlined, combustible materials around the masonry are susceptible to extreme heat coming through gaps in the chimney. Chimney fires are dangerous but are also avoidable and a chimney liner is the first line of defense.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/prevent-fireplace-carbon-monoxide-poisoning\/\">Carbon monoxide risks<\/a>. Without a chimney liner it is much more likely for improper venting. This means that the byproducts of combustion are more likely to enter the home and put your family at risk.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/what-is-creosote\/\">Creosote<\/a>. Chimney liners reduce the likelihood of creosote building up in the flue. Condensation from gas appliances can cause interior masonry damage which can in turn lead to chimney damage both inside and out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Damaged Masonry &amp; Mortar<\/h2>\n<p>When you think of chimneys, bricks naturally come to mind. While brick is considered tough, it isn\u2019t invincible, and neither is the mortar that holds that brick construction together. While brick and mortar won\u2019t last forever, there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/chimney-damage\/\">common old chimney problems<\/a> related to masonry that can be addressed to prolong the life of your chimney:<\/p>\n<h3>Settling<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/leaning-chimney-risks\/\">Chimneys can lean<\/a> or start to crack as older homes settle. Problems can range from the potential collapse of the chimney itself to the increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/dont-get-burned-chimney-fire-get-inspected\/\">chance of a fire<\/a>. As mentioned earlier, the common lack of a liner in older chimneys only compounds the potential for chimney fires when they begin to crack or lean. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/chimney-repair.php\">Repair for your chimney<\/a> should be addressed sooner than later.<\/p>\n<h3>Weather Damage<\/h3>\n<p>Stately old, historic homes, like those in our area of southeast Michigan, have chimneys with masonry that has sustained nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/top-5-reasons-you-have-a-leaky-chimney\/\">a century of weathering<\/a>. The brick exterior of an older chimney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/cracked-chimney\/\">will eventually wear down<\/a> after years of constant assault from the weather.<\/p>\n<h3>Spalling<\/h3>\n<p>Another old chimney problem stems from the weather. Here in southeast Michigan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorflue.com\/blog\/chimney-masonry-repair\/\">the freeze and thaw cycle can be brutal on older masonry<\/a>. You\u2019ve seen what one winter can do to Michigan roads; this back-and-forth between weather extremes can affect a chimney\u2019s safety and functionality.<\/p>\n<p>The porous nature of brick leads to its susceptibility. When moisture is absorbed into the bricks during cold weather, the freeze and thaw cycle can cause moisture to expand inside the brick which weakens it.
